Archery Netting Notes.

To help our customers make informed decisions on the suitability and performance of netting, please consider the following information.

Netting is not guaranteed to stop arrows.  If you are using small diameter arrows, compound bows, or any medium to high performance bow, the arrows will pass through netting.  If you think for a moment about target bosses, and how thick a target boss needs to be to stop arrows, it is not realistic to expect a net to act in the same way.

Netting is commonly used at ‘have-a-go’ type archery events, where bows are of low poundage and arrows of wide diameter are used.  They are often seen on archery ranges and tournaments, with the primary objective to slow the velocity of arrows and to catch the occasional wayward arrow, but they are never used as the only safety measure because they cannot be guaranteed to catch all arrows.

The wider the arrow and lower the velocity, the more likely nets are to catch the arrow.   For example, a longbow shooting a wooden arrow is more likely to be stopped than a compound bow shooting a carbon arrow.

Netting is only one element to be considered when setting up a safe shooting area.  It should never be used as the primary safety element.

When hanging a net, it should not be pulled taught.  Leave the net dragging on the floor and allow the horizontal to bunch like a curtain.  For example, a 3 meter width net hung to cover 2 meters will offer better stopping power than the same net pulled tight across 3 meters.

If you have any questions on safe shooting, feel free to contact us and we will be happy to help.
