Q: What's the best way to work out how much netting I need. Distance 20yds/metres or less, recurve/barebow - and I'm fairly accurate now. However, about 10 feet behind where I plan to put the target is a lane along which people walk, cars etc. so I'd rather not have arrows disappearing into ears! Also, I need a way to support the netting - any source for poles that you know of?

A: Netting should be hung loose, so the weight of the net helps slow the arrow down. e.g, a 4m net would cover approx 3m of ground. But it is important to remember that netting shouldn't be used as the only safety screen. If people are walking behind your netting, it is still not safe. Just to clear something up. - No backstop netting can guarantee to stop all arrows. In fact, if you are shooting competition arrows from a competition bow it is unlikely to stop your arrows, only slow them down. Look as the net only as a secondary line of defence when considering range safety and you should not rely upon it. So why have it at all? For some situations it is invaluable. For example, schools and Scout groups. ‘Have-a-go’ archery events. For these types of activities it is invaluable. It will catch arrows shot from lighter weight bows and save a lot of time on arrow collection. I hope that helps!
